Eaton at Intersolar Europe 2014: Leading the Way with Safety and Efficiency

Power management company Eaton will again demonstrate its leadership and commitment to sustainable energy generation at this year’s Intersolar Europe from the 4th to 6th June in Munich.

At stand A3.132 visitors can learn about Eaton’s leading technologies and the new products designed to ensure the safe distribution of electricity from the solar modules to the power grid while providing optimum protection for photovoltaic (PV) project investments. Eaton’s portfolio includes the Bussmann product line highlighted in an innovative String Combiner Box which will be on display.

As established experts in the field of electrical power management and distribution, Eaton is actively committed to the solar industry and to providing customers with solutions that meet their needs for safe, efficient and sustainable PV systems. Examples of such solutions are the new PV-DIS high performance disconnectors which the company is launching at the fair. These devices enable users to reliably and safely disconnect even larger solar power systems with voltages of up to 1,200 V DC over a nominal current range of 16 to 125 A. These switches have the added advantage of being extremely compact to the point that they use only half as much space in control cabinets as standard equivalent switches currently used in PV.

Eaton is also introducing a new range of PV surge protection devices in Munich. The SP-PV family protects systems from overvoltage which can be caused by the indirect effects of lightning. Here the user has the choice between the cost-efficient economy equipment, which is tested up to 160 A, or the high-performance models rated up to 1,000 A. The devices comply with EN 50539 and are measured either against test class T2 or even T1, which simulates a direct lightning strike.

Visitors to the Eaton stand at Intersolar Europe will also have an opportunity to examine a leading-edge PV String Combiner Box from the Eaton Bussmann product line. The Combiner Boxes ensure safe protection against overcurrent and overvoltage and are designed for systems voltages anywhere from 600 to 1,200 V DC. The Eaton Bussmann Combiner Box can be simply and cost-effectively configured to exact customer specifications including extensive monitoring options. The product offers IP65 protection making it suitable for use in challenging environmental conditions e.g. in a tropical or subtropical climate. Nearby the Combiner Box, visitors can also see examples from the rest of the large Bussmann portfolio for photovoltaic applications, which includes a wide range of fuse links, fuse holders and terminal blocks as well as surge protection devices.

Furthermore, Eaton will demonstrate another innovative method for monitoring complex PV systems at Intersolar. The Eaton BreakerVisu consists of a display and software which allows data from circuit breakers and measuring equipment to be easily visualised and logged, thus providing a complete, cost-effective, and ready-to-use solution. Users also have the option to operate the system as a gateway for central data transfer to a control centre and can easily connect third-party systems via Modbus RTU communication. As a result, BreakerVisu offers users an easy and economical solution for central monitoring of PV systems and their energy consumption.

In order to ensure that any solar power generated is safely and efficiently fed into the public network, Eaton’s portfolio also includes all of the components required for switching and protecting the system’s AC side in integrated or external disconnection equipment for automated and manual operation. This includes Eaton’s completely SF6-free medium voltage switchgear which will also be on display at the booth.
