Solar farms offer huge opportunities for creating eco-friendly landscaping according to Twig Group, specialists in ecological contracting & grounds maintenance.
The company, which is based in Horsmonden, Kent, is working with the top five solar companies in the UK and has seen its customer base throughout the solar industry grow substantially across the country in the past two years.
Key to this success is Twig Group’s extensive experience in wildflower and grassland management and focus on ecologically sustainable and the cost-effective management of solar panel farm sites, encouraging the development of sustainable eco-systems under the panels themselves
Recently published research by the Solar Trade organization found that solar farms have a positive impact on biodiversity for a range of plant and animal species when combined with a well-researched land management plan, in particular, broad leaved plants, grasses, butterflies, bumble bees and birds.
David Eyre, Managing Director at Twig Group said:
“We are expanding our business through working with solar companies to not just keep the grass down under the panels but providing ecological enhancements that put something back into the eco system.
Sustainable and cost-effective management of solar farms is essential to our customers and we provide both through the development of wild flower meadows and hedgerows which in turn are havens for wildlife and have a positive impact on the environment.
Twig Group has encouraged diversity of local wildlife including bees, birds and insects by planting 450 acres of wild flowers and more than 60,000 trees last winter, and installing a wide range of bird and bat boxes
The Solar Trade Organisation research shows that where solar farms are managed with low-intensity activity and low use of pesticides, wildlife populations can flourish in terms of diversity of species and abundance, especially among declining bird populations.”
